Error opening or Saving a wav attachment in Outlook 2003

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

I was frustrated so hopefully this will help you.  I get my voicemails as .wav attachments in an email and it got so I couldn’t click to open them or save them and then try and open them.

Here is my error and problem – everytime that I try to open or save “wav” files that I get as attachments in emails, I was getting the following error:

Can’t create file: (file name). Right-click the folder you want to create
the file in, and then click Properties on the shortcut menu to check your
permissions for the folder.

…So here is the solution – Microsoft in their infinite wisdom sticks all your attachments in a temporary file and keeps them their even after you are finished with them and probably deleted most of them from your email inbox.  I am running Outlook 2003 on a Windows Vista machine and here is all you have to do to fix your problem.

Go the the following and it is a hidden file so a booger to find, so change the THIS IS YOUR USER NAME to whatever your windows logon name is and the rest should be good a ‘copy and paste’.

C:\Users\ThisIsYourUserName\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\OLK2397

(this last part – OLK2397 – may be different on your machine, but try it as it is written here first)

Good luck! worked for me.

This site was helpful too http://www.ureader.com/msg/107516478.aspx

Link to Microsoft article Below is what Microsoft says

You exit Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 while e-mail attachments are open. These attachments are from e-mail messages that are in a secure Outlook folder. Alternatively, Outlook unexpectedly closes.

When this occurs, the attachments remain in the “Outlook Secure Temporary File” folder. This occurs even if you close the attachments after you exit Outlook.

Additionally, if you open the attachment to the e-mail message from the Preview pane, you do not receive a prompt to save changes when you exit Outlook.

This problem occurs because Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 cannot remove the temporary file or dispose of the secure temporary folder while the attachments are open.

The New UAV flying Beetles!

Saturday, August 15th, 2009

Last week I took my kids to see the new movie G-Force, big fan of Jerry Bruckheimer, which brought up a discussion with one of my buddies about other spy and war movies and the reality of all the cool toys they have in the movies.  He made a comment about how apparently the government questioned Tom Clancy about how he knew and was so accurate on his depiction of military technology in his 1984 Hunt for Red October and we marveled at it is probably even better than we see in the movies.

Back to point of how G-Force, a kids movie, ties to an aviation website.  After watching the movie about talking Guinea Pigs, Moles and Fly’s with camera’s (Agent Mooch), well the part of the fly’s with cameras seemed really cool yet unrealistic.  Well somehow this morning in my browsing of the web I ran across an article about some research projects going on at Berkely.  The first couple are cool, but the third is really…leaving me speechless WOW!

Some engineering students are working on expanding the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to MAV (Micro Air Vehicles) ‘taking it to new heights’ or in this case new sizes in developement of an inspect sized UAV/MAV.  In the meantime another group at Berkley has taken the concept to the G-Force level in that they have already tested and  achieved initiation, cessation, elevation and turn control of a freakin Beetle with a microprocessor that they were able to remote control.

Check out the links below to read more on Berkley’s site.  They have pictures too :) in case you don’t get the Math!

Crop Dusting May Be your Flying Ticket or paying for your next meal?

Friday, August 14th, 2009

I just read an article in the Wall Street Journal describing the increasing demand for crop dusting pilots or ‘aerial applicators’ as the are politically correctly called these days.  Anyhow it was the brilliance of a flight instructor slapping you on the back of the head telling you to get your head out of the airplane and get ahead of the airplane and fly.

This ‘Mr. Dusty Dowd’, (no relation to Matt Dowd in Eli Stone I am sure) is an example of things that used to be right in this country!  That is maybe he is harsh or like a military sergeant, but he wants you to learn right and be your best; not expect to be entitled or get things handed to you.

Check out the article for a chuckle and a good pilot story…bring back any memories of your flight instructor?  Let me know
