iPads fuel flight of paperless planes – USATODAY.com

The Federal Aviation Administration this year for the first time granted approval for two charter companies to use iPads instead of the bulky paper charts and manuals that pilots have been required to carry since the birth of modern aviation. Alaska Airlines is testing iPads in some of its planes, and Delta Air Lines and American Airlines say they’re planning on launching tests soon.

Nevada pilot starts company to offer trips in fighter planes

Retired Air Force pilot Richard Coe founded Air Combat Ace to give civilians a taste of flying military planes. The company in Henderson, Nev., allows civilians to fly fighter planes or to engage in aerial dog fighting — under the supervision of a fighter pilot. Las Vegas Sun

Senate passes FAA reauthorization bill

By an 87 to 8 vote, the Senate approved the Federal Aviation Administration bill on Thursday, which will fund the FAA for two years. Democrats claim the FAA bill is the new Congress’ “first jobs bill” and would save or create an estimated 280,000 jobs. The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee on Wednesday passed their version of a bill, which includes $59 billion funding over four years. Read Full Story…

The battle for Santa Monica Airspace Continues

There has been an on going battle to handicap or diminish operations at the Santa Monica Airport for several years now and the latest dig is the denial of two flight school applications at the airport citing “particularly intense environmental impacts” the schools would have had.

The denials went against a recommendation from Airport Director Bob Trimborn but was in keeping with guidance from the Airport Commission, which last month voted 3-1, with one abstention, to urge denial of the applications, but were in keeping of the past ‘guidance’ of the board to stifle operations at the airport.
